About Surfing Moms:
Surfing Moms is a nonprofit 501(c)3 that aims to ease the isolation of modern motherhood by building community through “surf-care” and other research-based maternal wellness and postpartum interventions. We help moms get or stay active in the water and engaged with community while balancing the demands of motherhood.
With 28 chapters across the USA, Surfing Moms turns local ripples into global waves of maternal care centered by place-based, surf-inspired programming that is equitable and inclusive. Surfing Moms is dedicated to nurturing mothers through water wellness by providing a community that encourages connection, belonging, and mental health. Regional coordinators volunteer and host surf-swaps with community childcare. From coast to coast, our national team provides targeted funding, insurance, programming, a safe, inclusive structure, educational opportunities, and more.

Location: Remote (with occasional in-person meetings/events, including the annual in-person board meeting).

Position Type: 50% FTE
Start date: Flexible within Feb - April 2025
Salary: Commensurate with experience: $70,000 - $90,000 (for 100% FTE*)
*Note: Position will be hired at 50% FTE, with the goal of increasing up to 100%, subject to availability of funds.

Position Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) will serve as the chief executive officer of Surfing Moms, providing strategic leadership, vision, and direction for the organization. As a small, grassroots NGO with lots of moving parts and a broad network, we are seeking an innovative, passionate, collaborative partner to guide organizational growth, i.e., a leader who can drive our organization's mission forward, attract funding, and ensure sustainable growth. This inaugural staff person will be supported by a contract-based accountant, bookkeeper, and potentially a social media lead. The ED is responsible for the overall management, operations, fundraising community engagement, and program development. The ED will work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure the organization’s mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and outreach efforts.
The successful candidate will lead all aspects of the organization focusing on growth, program implementation and fund development for the first year, ideally scaling up into a full-time position within 1-2 years of hire.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategic Planning:
Develop and implement strategic plans that meet the organization’s goals and objectives.
Act as a primary liaison between the Board of Directors and the organization’s staff, volunteers, and members.
Foster a positive and collaborative organizational culture that supports the mission and values of Surfing Moms.
Provide leadership and direction in the development of new programs and initiatives that align with the organization's mission.
Fundraising and Financial Management:
Develop and execute fundraising strategies, including grant writing, grant management, donor relations, and event planning to ensure financial sustainability.
Prepare and manage the annual budget, in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
Monitor the organization’s financial performance and provide regular reports to the Board of Directors.
Ensure that financial policies and procedures are followed and that the organization operates within its means and its legal obligations.
Ensure that the organization has systems and supports in place to maintain 501c3 and tax-compliance federally and locally.
Community Engagement and Advocacy:
Serve as the public face of the organization, promoting SurfingMoms’s mission and programs to the community, media, and potential partners.
Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including members, donors, sponsors, and community partners.
Oversee the development and execution of marketing and communication strategies, including social media, website management, and public relations.
Advocate for the needs and interests of surfing moms at the local, regional, and national levels.
Continually work towards increasing the diversity of the organization’s network,
Development of policies and programs to reach currently-underserved populations Program Management:
Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s programs and services.
Oversee the management and support of regional chapters, including existing chapter and Group Coordinator support, new chapter creation, and Group Coordinator training/onboarding.
Ensure that programs are effectively meeting the needs of the members and are aligned with the organization's mission.
Recruit, manage, and support volunteers and staff involved in program delivery. Board Administration and Support:
Provide administrative support to the Board of Directors, including preparing agendas, materials, and reports for board meetings.
Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and development of new board members, with a particular focus on achieving diversity within the organization’s leadership.
Ensure effective communication between the board, staff, volunteers, and members.
Qualifications:
Experience: At least 3 years of experience in a nonprofit management role, with demonstrated success in leadership, fundraising, and program management.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Social Work, or a related field. Experience can potentially be substituted for education.
Skills:
Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a diverse team.
Proven track record in fundraising, including grant writing, individual, foundation, and/or corporate giving, and event planning.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
Financial acumen, including experience successfully managing budgets and financial reporting.
Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Passion for the mission of Surfing Moms and an understanding of the unique challenges faced by mothers and carers.
Other Requirements:
Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
Ability to travel as needed for meetings and events.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, basic layout and design (e.g. Canva or Photoshop), social media platforms, and website hosting (ideally Squarespace).
